An interesting post on the Women's Voices for Change website identifies a subtle bias that perceives an unhealthy tilt to the presence of dogs in the lives of single women:
Married? The dog's just part of the family. Single? The dog's replacing what you're missing in your pathetic little life.
Here's my take: I am just part of the family.
(Perhaps the most important part, though. Definitely the most important dog.)
